MY BACKGROUND

Matt is a proud parent of two wonderful children in the Virginia Beach Public School System. He met his wife in Las Vegas while doing service work, lived in Shanghai, China for a few years teaching English, and obtained his undergraduate and graduate degree while living in Tennessee.

My mom and dad were major reasons I got involved with community work. Both of my parents were civil rights activists back in the 60s and they met while working with VISTA in East Tennessee. I grew up hearing their stories about standing up for racial justice and the importance of living a life a service. -Matt

Matt spent five years working at DePauw University in which he connected college students to volunteer work in the community. He built a powerful network of over 22 community partners and worked with schools to develop mentoring, literacy, and language enhancement programs. His programs have been featured on NPRs All Things Considered  and he successfully brought in over $250,000 in external funding. During his time at DePauw he presented at over 10 conferences on student leadership models he developed, did service work in Ecuador, and served as a National Fellow with the Bonner Scholar program that works with 75+ universities and is a college scholarship program for first generation college students.

After DePauw, Matt joined an ed tech startup after it received its seed round and had about 30 students. This school was a vocational training program that taught individuals with no tech backgrounds how to code, do digital marketing, and learn UX Design. Matt built out multiple business units of the school that included student operations, orientation, graduation, student conduct, and disability services. He was in charge of the student experienced and played a pivotal role in the institution stretching from Indiana to enrolling over 5,000 learners across 42 states. This company was eventually acquired by a University and along the way Matt gained skills in data management, operations, online education, technology, and leading a high performing team. This school took service workers, retail professionals, distribution center workers, and formerly incarcerated individuals and helped them obtain meaningful employment at companies like JP Morgan, Google, Meta, Citibank, and regional economic needs. Matt has demonstrated success in building powerful partnerships with businesses and helping to level up a workforce to meet hiring needs.

Matt now works in the healthcare industry where he is tasked with professional development and training in sales.

You will often find Matt creating music with wife, playing chess, and enjoying the great outdoors. Matt's favorite book is Crime and Punishment and he has been a vegetarian for over 22 years. â€‹
